Germ and virus-free with thermofin and UV-C!

UV-C disinfection

In times of Corona, it is more important than ever to protect yourself from viruses and germs. With thermofin® evaporators and air coolers, which are equipped with special lamps for UV-C disinfection, you take the first step to protect your employees, your company and the environment.

1. General information

UV-C radiation does not occur naturally on earth, it is absorbed by the earth's atmosphere and can therefore only be generated artificially using special lamps.

The great advantage of UV-C radiation is that, depending on the radiation strength and exposure time, bacteria, viruses and microorganisms can be destroyed or inactivated. It prevents the organisms from functioning and reproducing and thereby loses the ability to spread and cause diseases in humans. Microorganisms have different levels of resistance to UV-C radiation. The simpler the structure of a microorganism, the easier it is to inactivate it using UV-C radiation.

The radiation is invisible to the human eye, but it can be dangerous for humans in high radiation intensity. The following health risks can arise:

  • inflammation of the cornea / conjunctiva of the eye
  • burns to the skin
  • damage to DNA

It is therefore imperative that the UV-C radiation is sealed off, which makes it easy to use this technology.

UV-C light comprises short-wave rays with a wavelength of approx. 100-280 nanometers. Classic low-pressure lamps have a wavelength of 185 - 254 nm. At a value <240 nm, ozone is formed. We only offer ozone-free lamps and a wavelength of 254 nm.

SARS-CoV-2, Ebola, E-coli, Influenza, MERS and Legionella can also be inactivated among many other organisms.

According to internal calculations, our thermofin® units show a disinfection of 90 to 99.9 %*. It has been scientifically proven and confirmed by numerous studies that UV-C radiation eliminates germs and corona viruses on surfaces and in aerosols.

2. Influencing parameters

The influencing factors of UV-C disinfection include:

  • humidity
  • air temperature
  • air speed
  • dwell time
  • radiation intensity
  • lifespan
  • degree of reflection (material), surfaces of the unit
  • coating of radiators
  • room volume / circulation rate
  • prevailing air quality + air entry

3. Difference between surface and air disinfection

Oberflächendesinfektion air disinfection
direct irradiation of a surface direct irradiation of the airflow
lower UV-C performance high UV-C performance
  • efficient avoidance of microbiological growth on the surfaces concerned
  • direct irradiation of the fins or the interior of the unit

  • efficient solution for effective air disinfection
  • disinfection of the circulating air

Pure air and clean surfaces with the highest hygiene requirements.

5. Advantages

The following advantages result from UV-C disinfection:

  • reduction of the germ load in the circulating air and on components
  • increase in shelf life of food / product quality
  • avoidance of the sick building syndrome
  • reduction of infections of the employees and consequently of production downtimes
  • avoidance of resistance build-up
  • targeted inactivation of selected germs
  • low acquisition costs compared to retrofitting
  • high sterilization rates
  • ozone-free disinfection of the air
  • lower environmental pollution by dispensing with chemical disinfection

6. Application areas

UV-C disinfection can and should be used primarily in the food industry - i.e. in slaughterhouses, in fish, fruit and vegetable processing plants and dairies, in cold rooms as well as in work and storage rooms, in order to ensure optimal occupational hygiene.

7.  Operation / maintenance / cleaning / occupational safety

  • foldable fans required for indoor installation (TxN, TxDN, ...)
  • foldable privacy screen when mounting the housing
  • easy cleaning / maintenance
  • no additional tools required to open the housing
  • easy re-ordering of replacement lamps possible
  • reliable isolation of UV-C radiation ensured
